Madame Saito: 75 Years of Flavor invites you into the heart of Philadelphia’s culinary legacy, tracing the extraordinary journey of Madame Saito—a revered sushi chef and the inventor of the Philadelphia sushi roll, whose career has shaped both the city’s palate and spirit. Through graceful imagery and heartfelt storytelling, it captures how one woman transformed sushi into a cultural bridge across generations and brings joy to sushi lovers around the world.

Phuong Kim Nguyen

Phuong Nguyen is the Co-Founder and CEO of The Women’s Film Festival in Philadelphia, PA. In 2013, Phuong was also the Festival Director for the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival and is a former board member of the organization. She has also worked as a production consultant for a short film piece called “In My Little Corner of the World, Anyone Would Love You” that was presented in London in spring of 2016 and at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in summer 2021. Phuong was chosen to be a film juror for QFlix Film Festival 2016 and 2019 and The Philadelphia Film Festival 2019. She is also a partner of a production and distribution for the company 3 Left Handed Women, where they help distribute and produce film and media content made by or about women.

Madame Saito
Director/Producer
As the “Queen of Sushi” in the Philadelphia area, Chef Madame Saito is a perpetual learner of the culinary arts. She was recently recognized as an exemplary international sushi instructor by the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia and in addition to her Japanese roots, Madame Saito also has formal education at the Le Cordon Bleu and the Ritz Escoffier in Paris. As an educator, Madame Saito has been an instructor at Temple University Center City Campus for the past 21 years. In addition to Temple University, she has provided sushi demonstrations at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the University of Pennsylvania, and many other public and private events. As recognition for Madame Saito’s dedication to teaching about sushi and Japanese culture for the past 28 years, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Education from Temple University Center City in April 2009. Chef of the Year 2010 from the American Culinary Federation (AFC).
Madame Saito is the original inventor of the Philadelphia sushi roll.
